Summary
This position may be filled at the level of Research Compliance Intermediate Manager or Research Compliance Associate Manager, depending on the experience and qualifications of the selected applicant.
The University of Michigan is currently seeking an Assistant Director (Market title: Research Compliance Associate/Intermediate Manager) to serve within the Animal Care and Use Office. The Assistant Director, reporting directly to the Senior Associate Director of the Animal Care and Use Office, provides essential leadership and oversight within the ACU Office.
The Assistant Director is a key member of the management team and provides leadership and guidance to all members of the ACUO. They will also provide guidance to all individuals conducting animal activities under the auspices of the University of Michigan. In addition, the Assistant Director will represent the ACUO across campus serving as a key member on committees, task forces, and councils relating to animal research, as well as at national meetings/conferences.
The person in this role ensures Animal Care and Use Program activities are compliant with international, federal, and state regulations governing the use of animals in research, teaching, and testing. In this capacity, the selected candidate facilitates Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) responsibilities associated with reviewing, approving, and overseeing animal activities associated with approximately 1000 animal care and use protocols. They will ensure the institution adheres to funding agency terms and conditions, internal policies, and accreditation standards at all University of Michigan locations including the Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint campuses as well as research stations, and field sites.
Responsibilities*
-Assist in developing and implementing initiatives and strategic plans to address the existing and emerging needs of the animal care and use program.
-Lead and manage special projects including analyzing, interpreting, and preparing reports to support decision-making as well as driving the implementation of the changes.
-Human resource responsibilities such as supervising select ACUO staff members, interviewing, hiring, training, conducting performance evaluations, fostering professional development activities, making salary recommendations, as well as planning, assigning, and reviewing individuals' daily responsibilities.
-Manage and address inquiries, problems, and concerns from faculty, staff, students, the general public, and regulatory agencies regarding the care and use of vertebrate animals for research, testing, or instruction at the University.
-Oversee the development of relevant policies, programs, and standard operating procedures to ensure compliance with regulations, policies, and nationally accepted standards.
-Oversee the semi-annual animal care and use program review and facilities inspections.
-Assist in hosting inspections and site visits from outside regulatory agencies.
-Assist in the preparation and submission of reports to governmental and accreditation agencies.
-Maintain knowledge of current information and issues regarding laboratory animal science, and engage in professional development activities.
Desired Qualifications*
-Background with educational experience generally associated with a Master's degree or equivalent years of work experience. Certification for Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) desirable or attainment of certification within one year of eligibility.
-Prefer 10 years experience related to the management of animal care and use programs in a University setting.
-Effective management and interpersonal skills, including personnel management. Demonstrated ability to hire and train new staff and an ability to motivate and retain professional staff. Five (5) or more years of supervisory experience required, preferably within an academic environment.
-Ability to mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach: assign accountabilities; set objectives; establish priorities; and monitor and evaluate results.
-An expert understanding of ethical principles, federal regulations, agency guidelines, and nationally accepted standards for animal research; as well as other agency-specific requirements and familiarity with typical University contracts and agreements relating to the IACUC.
-Strong commitment to the welfare of animals used in research.
-Experience in the AAALAC accreditation process.
-Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
-Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.

-Proven track record of success facilitating progressive organizational change and development within a growing organization.
